A key to continuing your walk of faith is finding a church where you can learn more about the bible and receive support from other Christians.
To begin, try visiting several of the churches in your area to see which one appeals to your particular personality. You’ll be exposed to different pastors with different preaching styles. You’ll also be exposed to different sizes of congregations and different styles of worship. The particular denomination is not as important as whether or not each church supports the basic tenets of christianity. Each church will also have its own personality, and you will find that certain churches make you feel more comfortable than others…or, perhaps, you will find that a certain pastor “speaks to you” every time he preaches a sermon. Whatever the attraction, you need to find a church where you feel welcome and accepted.
Although it can be somewhat intimidating, it’s also a good idea to become involved in a small group…a sunday school class, a bible study group, etc.. In a truly christian church, you will find these small groups to be non-judgmental and very welcoming. You’ll have an opportunity to become familiar with a core group of people in a relatively short period of time. With this support you’ll find it much easier to expand your circle of friends and to become more involved in the church.
By becoming part of a local church you’ll have an opportunity to associate with more mature Christians who can help you grow in your faith and, more importantly, help you in those times when you stumble in your walk. Remember, faith is a journey…those who are more mature in their faith will have encountered similar obstacles to those which you are facing, and they can help you through them. You also need to remember that unlike the “prosperity gospel” preachers who seem to be very popular today, the bible does not teach that once you become a Christian your life will be perfect. On the contrary, the bible is very clear that we will ALL face difficult times…the difference is that we will have the hope of Jesus Christ to carry us through these trials.
So step out of your comfort zone and visit some churches in your area. I’m certain you will find one that has the right mix of theology and personality to make you feel safe and welcome.
